Mij's wonderful booksSunday 11th January, the York group had a lovely chat with Mij Kelly, the excellent picture book writer! Thanks so much to Mij for coming along and hope to see you again.

Writing Across the Age Ranges with Linda Newbery
The Costa award winning author, Linda Newbery, came to Lincoln!
We had an excellent session with Linda as she tallked about the inspiration behind her new book, 'The Sandfather'. Linda is heavily influenced by place and can sometimes find that a subject springs from where she has been. For, The Sandfather' she took her camera and photographed a seaside resort out of season. She moulded a sand sculpture of a figure and snapped images of the tide washing it away. Linda has a very visual approach to writing. Her protagonist viualises the story for her, like a film playing out; she spoke of the story in scenes.
Linda talked about her other work for younger children, including the new 'Cat Tales' series for Egmont, a subject close to the heart of a writer who has four cats. She spoke about approaches to publishing and for those who might be interested (!) identified a gap in the market as being the stand alone novel for 7-9 year olds.
This was a great discussion, followed by tea and many biscuits. Thanks once again to Linda and the excellent Bishop Grosseteste College for making it happen.
